Groovy Friday Tribute

Composer and Groovy Friday alumnus Michel Legrand, passed away last week at the age of 86. During the course of his career he received thirteen Academy Awards nominations and won three Oscars. His work appears in such films as “The Thomas Crown Affair,” “Lady Sings the Blues,” “Yentl,” “Ice Station Zebra,” “Atlantic City” and many others.

Here at Groovy Friday, he’s best loved for his contribution to two classic French film musicals, “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” and “The Young Girls of Rochefort.” We featured the second of those films in an early Groovy Friday post. You can re-live that here.

In addition here are two more clips from the same film.  First it’s male leads George Chakiris and Grover Dale dancing in way tight trousers and strange white snow boots.  Plus you can sing along.  Groovy!

And this is costar Gene Kelly being his usual charming movie star self while lip-syncing in French.  Everything else is pure Gene including dancing with sailors and singing to French kids.

Such beautiful melodies.  Adieu, Michel Legrand.
