Came across this little gem by Jamila Woods today entitled “Heavn”.  And boy, am I glad I did.  A perfect blend of Sade, Erikah Badu and The Cure. Yup, you read that right.  Don’t believe me? Listen for yourself.

Oh..did I mention she reps the Chi? Chicago has been making a big push lately with its fair share of musical artists over the last few years. The familiar names like Kanye, Common, Lupe fiasco, Twista (who is actually from Gary, IN.) and Chief Keef. But there’s a new group of talent coming up right behind them, Chance the Rapper, Saba, and Kweku Collins being just the latest.

But Jamila Woods was a nice find, a pleasant surprise. A breath of fresh air coming out of the windy city where the music rises from the streets to the sky.

Harriet Tubman is one of America’s most beloved historical figures but has sadly been largely relegated to just a few facts during Black History Month. This incredible ex-slave, spy, cook, nurse, public speaker and rescuer deserves a story worthy of her stature.

“Minty” – tentatively titled after Tubman’s nickname – is a “reimagining” of Harriet Tubman as an action hero. It is a period piece with a modern flare.
