Groovy Friday – Help Yourself to Sir Thomas Jones Woodward

tomjonesarm

It’s Friday!

This week we feature Tom Jones, without a doubt one of the grooviest cats on the planet.  The Welsh singer was born in 1940.  After fronting a band called “Tommy Scott and The Senators” for a year, he released his first solo single called “Chills and Fever” at the age of 24.  It went nowhere.  However, his second single, “It’s Not Unusual” was a smash hit and launched Jones into a career that endures to this day.

During his heyday in the late 60s and early 70s, stories of women throwing their underwear and hotel keys onto the stage when he performed were common.  During that time, Jones claims he had sex with up to 250 women a year.  In 2006, Queen Elizabeth rewarded his behavior by knighting him.  OK, knighthood was actually bestowed for his contribution to music.  Either way, it’s good to be Sir Tom.

This week’s clip is taken from the premier episode of his television show “This is Tom Jones” which ran from 1969-71 on ITV in Great Britain and on ABC here in the United States.  He played host to some incredible talent.  We visited the show here last January with another one of the grooviest cats on the planet, guest star Sammy Davis Jr.  Those are Sir Tom’s legendary sideburns in the first few seconds.

Have a groovy weekend!

Groovy Friday extra!

While flipping through videos of Tom Jones, I found this.  Did I mention that he hosted some incredible talent on his show?  I did.  And did he?  He did.

And groovy?  No doubt.
