At Home and Abroad: The Photography of Tania Gail

Tania GailTania Gail discovered her passion for photography on a whirlwind trip across Europe during her twenties. “One of my tour mates took me under his wing and shared his photo knowledge with my poor, hapless self,” she says. She had been struggling with a brand new SLR camera on the trip with no idea how it worked. Her friend’s kindness introduced her to the world of photography and she’s never stopped snapping. Tania has no formal training in photography but had the good fortune to work with a series of photo mentors over the years who had a profound effect on the development of her creative outlook. She says she is intrigued by all aspects of photography and will always consider herself a student of the craft – always learning and improving.

Tania has a degree in biology and works in the healthcare industry in Philadelphia. A lifelong resident of the historic city, Tania says, “I absolutely adore my hometown. It is a wonderful city that has successfully incorporated all the trappings of a modern city without losing its old world soul. Also, the cheesesteak is fabulous!” From Philly, it is a short drive to the ocean or the mountains, and Tania enjoys having easy access to diverse landscapes to practice her photography.

Tania GailBrowsing Tania’s work online, I found a wide variety of subject matter. Nature, portraiture, sporting events, animals, and travel are among the themes found in her galleries. I especially enjoyed her travel photos of Iceland and Europe. (I may be partial to her portraits of Buster as well!) Last year, a PR team representing the Chateau Versailles asked to use one of her photos from her first European trip for inclusion in an online photo collection highlighting Versailles through the eyes of its visitors. The photo was posted years ago to Flickr. “It points to my belief that photos can have a far broader impact that you might imagine. Discovering the ways my photos impact the world is what drives my creative energies,” Tania says.

IcelandOver the years, Tania has created opportunities to travel abroad and has captured some fabulous experiences along the way through her striking photographs. Iceland in particular left a huge imprint on her creative imagination and she plans further visits to this “island of trolls.” However, Tania doesn’t have to travel far to find creative inspiration. She describes her latest project to document a forgotten piece of urban woodland that sits across from her own front porch. Her plan is to chronicle the interaction of the seasons in the forest on her blog at taniagail.com.  “Perhaps one day there will be interest in displaying these images in a gallery,” Tania comments, “but right now I’m having fun discovering and photographing the beauty of this woodland.”
